**~Columbia University Fall 2017 Transfer Thread~**

@collegebusiness I cannot speak specifically for Columbia, however I believe that most schools will recalculate your GPA based upon transferable courses, on their own GPA scale.

If someone has a 4.0, but only took bowling, art, music, and remedial classes (nothing against those!) they won’t be judged as superior to a person with a 3.7 and half their pre-med req’s done.

Likewise, someone with a 4.2 won’t be judged as superior to someone with a 4.0 whose GPA literally couldn’t be a 4.2. They will bring every applicant to as even a footing as possible before evaluating them.

Anyone know when application tracking for transfers generally becomes available?

Based off of last year, they usually send the applicant ID 8-10 days after the online application is submitted. It is always best to email them. Best of luck.

Hello! I am from Grinnell and I seek to transfer to Columbia’s east asian studies program. I do not have a decent standardized test score (32 ACT) but I have a 3.9 GPA for my first semester and got 3 recommend letters. Also, I tried to take as many East Asian courses as possible. Do I stand a chance?

So if it’s been exactly a week since I submitted my application and still haven’t gotten the information to get into the applicant portal, that’s normal?

@esterling If you go to the Columbia applicant portal and click the link to reset your password, you’ll be able to get in with the email address associated with your application and your date of birth. The Columbia ID will be posted there about 3 weeks after the application is submitted; that’s how long it took for me. However, they won’t actually start the document tracking until Mid-March for transfers.

Here’s an excerpt from their email: “We encourage you to track the completeness of your application by visiting your application status page. You may check your status online from March 15, 2017, through April 11, 2017.”

@Sparks343 oh thanks so much, I just set it up. I was a little late to the game in starting the transfer process, so that’s why I’m only starting this now. So that means I have to turn everything in by March 1st, but I won’t be able to see what documents they’ve received and processed until mid-March?

@esterling Essentially, yes. March 1 is a postmark deadline, meaning you should have mailed all necessary documents/forms by that date, not that they have to be there by that date. As things can happen during the process that are out of our control, say a transcript gets lost in the mail or some other complication arises, you will have time to resubmit anything that is not marked as received/processed once tracking begins without penalization. Here’s what Columbia’s FAQ says:

"Admissions online document tracking is only available during certain times in the admissions process.

If, at that time, you discover that any items are listed as “not received/processed,” please have the school submit a duplicate copy of this missing information to us via fax or via email at ugrad-confirm@columbia.edu as soon as possible. Faxed/emailed materials will take up to one week for processing. You will have time to submit the missing credentials before decisions are released without being penalized.

According to our Application Instructions, we will consider a file complete with only one Teacher Evaluation on file.

We do not track Midyear Reports/senior grades or additional materials."

@Sparks343 thank you so much for your help!! It’s all much clearer now

is it too informal to write “woke” in one of my supplements?

@aurora030 I think you have a good shot!

Are you currently a freshman? I’m also an international student and I need a lot of financial aid so I’m kind of worried about that.

Also, does anyone know when the deadline is for submitting the college mid-term report for this semester’s classes? I don’t think my school even has midterm grades released until the end of the semester

@trmx97 The midterm report can be sent in after the March 1st deadline. I would try to send it in by mid-march. Your midterm report is based off of your the exams, papers, quizzes, etc that you have already completed by the middle of the semester. If you don’t have a grade for the class by the middle of the semester, your instructor can indicate that no grade was available.

  1. Can I submit my common app without my 2nd teacher rec fully completed? It shows that my 2nd professor started it but this guy is being so unreliable…idk what to do and I am panicking even after repeatedly following up with him. I really hope it gets done by the deadline

  2. Also, my school doesn’t do midterm grades. Should I have my profs “estimate” a letter grade for my midterm report? When would be the LATEST time to send the midterm report by?

@terr24lr I have the same question lol, does anyone know the absolute latest to submit mid-term grades?

Hi guys! Submitted my app last night. So excited to hear back

Hey guys, I was wondering if any of you could explain what GS is. From what I remember, on my application, there wasn’t even an option to apply to GS. The program is only for non-traditional students right?

It’s mainly for non traditional students. Also part time students can only go to gs. They have different tuition rates, boarding, core, and everything. You can’t apply to gs using the common app, they have a separate personal application.
