I've heard very good things.

John Jay ain't so bad.

So how did everyone like it? I hear that a few flights got cancelled Friday afternoon; I hope everyone is now safely home.

Hartley is amazing. B)

And I thought everything was awesome. Even though the last dance was completely lame. Talent Show + Open Mike Night were cool, though.

Omg- I LOVED it.

for all the people who went this yr....
how much free time do you get? like unstructured free time? would it be enough to possibly work at a lab as well? or hold a job?

Well...first off, I didn't go this year, I actually went two summers ago in 04.
If you really want to hold a job- it's possible. But why would you? Consider how much you are paying...

The point of the Columbia Summer program is for you to meet people and experience college life and most of all, to enjoy New York City. It'll be difficult to accomplish any of this if you get a job....there's no point.

You get an insane amount of free time. If you wanted to hold a job, you easily could.

However, it's only a month long. And agreeing with the poster above me, it would make the program a whole lot less fun. Although I do think it will allow you to still meet people and see what college is like when juggling class life/ social life/ job, I'd rather just have fun while you can.

haha actually i live very close to NYC (30 min)... but i want to be a residential student and was wondering if it was possible... and yeah...

Okay, A few questions..... What kind of questions were on that test? What kind of knowledge would you need? Is room and board free? How long is the program?

There was so much free time, it was crazy.

To KidNovelist, what test are you talking about? And room and board was not free, and the program is a month long(Session 1).

The test you have to take before they accept you in. Is the program during the summer or during the school year? Because it got confusing on their official website http://www.columbia.edu/cu/shp/ . Do they provide metrocards?

Im thinking of joining this. What classes do you recommend taking?

Is this a fun place to be?

i went to Columbia's HSP this past summer in 2006...i was in explorations in genetics and molecular biology with mrs. hazen and mr. ciulla

i would recommend it. i had a great experience. nyc is awesome of course, i learned a great deal from the class and staying on campus is really helpful in determining whether you feel comfortable at the school or not...i applied ED to columbia university and i was just accepted into the Class of 2011 ! if you want something extra to add to your application, i think attending a summer program is a great way to go..even though it was quite expensive i wont lie (about $6,000 not including airfare and spending money)

Wait a moment, Isn't this program free?

No (10 char)

hello all!
i visited columbia recently in december and i researched the summer program before. i love the campus, and the program sounds amazing. i would like to do the chemistry class. has anyone taken it, if yes, did you enjoy it, was it hard?etc.. thanks!

I'm kinda confused about this Columbia Summer Program. Is it just like Harvard SSP or programs like that? What makes this different?

Hey, my friend is attending the HS Theatrical collaboration program at Columbia. He plans to playwright.
Does anyone have any wisdom about this program?

I haven't read this complete thread, but Kidnovelist, the website that you displayed is for the Columbia Science Honors Program, which is free, but happens during the school year, not the summer, and is not residential. Everyone else seems to be talking about the summer program, which is completely different. There have been threads on the Science Honors Program in the High School Life section. I believe the test is happening this month (or has passed already).
