I applied as a prospective Sophomore
Current College: Small LAC in Charlotte, NC
College GPA: 4.0
HS GPA: 3.9
ACT: Didn’t submit, wasn’t proud of it
SAT: 1490 (math 760, reading 730) Essay: 21
SAT II Subject: Spanish: 790
Major: Astrophysics (plan to add on a double major in Computer science or economics if possible)
Work experience: Harris Teeter cashier, an intern for a non-profit that helps low-income families get out of foreclosures, country club server
College and HS ECs: college Physics Club, church volunteer, Red Cross blood donor ambassador, explorers club, piano, DECA, NHS
High School: I went to an early college high school, which is a 5-year program where you do high school and college at the same time and graduate with your HS diploma and an Associates degree. I did this program in 4 years.
Hooks: Hispanic
Essays: In my CommonApp essay I mentioned that I wished to transfer because of my desire to be in an intellectually challenging community and to fulfill my career goals. I also mentioned personal reasons in terms of finances and other things. For the supplement essays, I just mentioned my passions in astrophysics and how it formed my identity and curiosity. The research opportunities and course selection were a major point in my why columbia? essay.
Recommendations: I got one from my financial accounting professor and my physics professor (and department chair). Since I went to a small school I was close to both of them.
@johonmilla
Thank you so much! You have really high stats from high school. Did you apply as a senior? I ask because I am a high school junior, and I transferred to an IB school where my grades dropped tremendously. I probably won’t get in as a high school senior, so I was hoping to apply as a transfer.
@Selenarahman I did apply as a senior! I got waitlisted though. I think you should definitely give it a shot senior year. Applying even if you don’t think you’ll get in is better than not applying at all. Columbia is known for their holistic approach for admissions, so don’t think a grade drop is a deal breaker.
I truly wish you good luck and hope to see you on campus in the future!
Anyone who was waitlisted submit a LOCI?
i dont think anyone submitted a LOCI
@abcanonymousdef i submitted one, did you?
Is anyone here declining their acceptance to Columbia for a different school?
@g4gtown did you write a letter?
@chartellio1 yeah I submitted a letter, hopefully it helps! Good luck!
@abcanonymousdef good luck to you, too!!
@WordSmithNY It definitely does not feel like a women’s college in terms of no men. Barnard women can take as many classes as they want at the other schools at Columbia University, join CU sororities/ clubs/ societies/ sports teams/ etc., can use any of the libraries and cafeterias at Columbia, live in Columbia dorms, and even graduate at the Columbia University-Wide graduation receiving Columbia degrees. Columbia students take classes, use facilities and join clubs at Barnard as well. Plus, as you mentioned, NYC is a huge city with tons of men, so finding boys is not an issue. It is a women’s college in the sense of female empowerment though!
i tried to log onto the portal today… and it tells me that “No account exists for this email address”…
Does anyone else have this problem?
hi guys, I was waitlisted and submitted a LOCI… good luck to all of you!
@otsihpem, my portal is the same today as it was throughout May ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Has anyone called or does anyone know when we can expect a decision for waitlists?
got this message at 5:15 today, anyone else?
“Our incoming transfer class remains full, which leaves us with the regrettable task of releasing you from our waitlist so that you may go forward with your plans for the coming year.”
