Fortunately I have been accepted to both of these universities and am having a tough time deciding between the two. I want to do either Electrical or Chemical engineering. It would be very helpful if someone could provide a unbiased opinion about which one I should choose. I was also invited to be a C. Prescott Davis scholar at Columbia so I would like to know what that entails. Thank you.

It depends what you look for in a college. Both Columbia and CMU have excellent engineering programs no doubt, but they are drastically different in several aspects.
If you are looking for a diverse urban university that is filled with people passionate in every field of study, then I suggest you go to Columbia. If you are maybe looking for a more science intensive and technology oriented university in smaller town, then maybe CMU is your best bet. Each has its own pros and cons.

Despite what some people might tell you, the prestige of both universities shouldn’t be the main factor in deciding what school to attend. It just really depends what kind of people you want to be around and what kind of environment you want to be in! Also, definitely factor in financial aid. That 8 billion plus endowment isn’t just meant to sit there in some New York bank. Good luck with your decisions and I hope you will join me in Morningside Heights this fall!

PS. You were a named scholar for Columbia, congratulations! While this doesn’t entail any money with it, being a named scholar means you get access to certain events and stuff throughout your four years at Columbia.

I’m actualy leaning towards Columbia because of its location and Core curriculum.
