I would like to go into medicine later on. I'm just wondering which of these schools would be better. I've tried to find information on Columbia pre-med but came up with just about nothing. Thing is, I love the city (lived there for a few years) but everybody keeps saying Duke is the place to go for med. Help?

please dont base this important decision on the ALLEGED actions of three stupid jocks- you'll regret it in the long run. it could have happened at many schools, and columbia's location in harlem doesnt make it the safest school in the world

Yeah, I have heard about the whole lacrosse story and I'm willing to take it with a grain of salt. Unfortunately there seems to be virtually no information (is that a bad sign?) on the quality of Columbia's pre-med.

2.) I'm sure Columbia premed is also great.

3.) I might get in trouble for saying this, but if you can come down to Duke, visit us, spend a couple days with us, and still honestly wish you could stay in NYC... whatever slight edge we give you as a premed won't be worth you sacrificing your college experience. Premeds at both places, I'm sure, do great. Don't sacrifice a college experience on the basis of a few percentage points, especially since you can't be 100% sure you're going to enter medicine anyway.

4.) Do bear in mind, though, that sometimes going someplace new can be the best thing that ever happened to you. I tell this to Raleigh kids who want to come to Duke all the time: think about exploring the country a little bit. It's one of the best times in your life to go see someplace new.

very true, columbia is VERY safe and is in a very nice neighbourhood....it is in morningside hights, not harlem....i'm not really sure about this but i think columbia is the safest or second safest ivy.

First, I'd assume they're both higher than one should be comfortable with.

Second, the crime rate IN the city is not what matters. After all, it only matters if you actually have a crime committed against you. Check the odds on that. My guess? Almost all city-based colleges are pretty much the same.

Columbia Premed is real hard work. You really have to be sure that is what you want. They do have some of the best proff. out there known to all medical institutions.
