Hi, I'm from New York and intend to major in Computer and Electrical engineering, and minor in business and finances. I am currently choosing between the Fu School of Engineering at Columbia and the University of Michigan at Ann-Arbor but cannot decide. I've visited Columbia numerous times and planning a visit to Michigan but I need to decide soon. Which do you choose for the above studies?

columbia. You cant minor at Ross, unless you do a program called EGL, which is competitive to get in. You need a 3.6 by the end of freshman year to have a chance to get in. So if you want your minor, probably columbia

It all depends on what you want to do. If you are looking for a more engineering education, pick Michigan. If you are looking at a career in business/finance, you are probably better off at Columbia. Michigan does not offer a minor in business nor any type of major/minor in finance.

HAHA dsmo i beat you to it

perhaps I phrased it wrong. My passion is in computer and electrical engineering but I would like a background in business for the company startup in technology I am currently working on. I have found information on dual degrees for students of the college of engineering I think this would suffice. From what I hear, Ross school is one of the best in the nation.

Can anyone give me some more perspective? I need to make a decision I’m so torn.

according to my advisor, the dual degree is avalible but is not recommended because unless you come in with a boatload of AP credit and only take classes that you need, you’ll complete it in around 6 years of time. the only program that’s worth it is EGL

so there’s no other options? sounds like such a solid obstacle to a potentially viable choice. My love has always been in engineering - specifically applied to my company startup. From my previous perceptions, it seemed like a good school that encouraged entrepreneurship like these…

Would you still recommend Columbia over UMichigan?

Are most of your clients from New York? That should be taken into consideration since you won’t be able to fly across the country often to see them.

Well we’re still in the project development phase - at this point I can still move and continue with a new team.

I talked to U-Michigan and they recommended the Center for Entrepreneurship which is a 9 credit program, I can take some classes at Ross Business School, and it is recognized on my Bachelor’s In Engineering as a “Certificate in Entrepreneurship”. They also offer UROP for research as early as 1st semester freshman year, and I’ll apply to EGL in sophomore year.

Can anyone else give me some input? At this point I’m leaning towards UMich.
