Coming out story as common app essay??

The question I am targeting is: Some students have a background or story that is so central to their identity that they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

I wanna share my coming out story but I'm not sure if it is going to be too personal or if the college admission officer has read so many of these that Im just another applicant that can't find a better way to write his common app essay. My story isn't the typical one, or at least the one I've heard and read, that everyone accepts. I was raised by extremely religious parents who are immigrants from a desolate region of brazil.
I wanna talk about led me to come out or the result of me coming out
Pre coming out
- the struggle to come to terms with my sexually
- knowing your going to hated for who you are
- Bargaining, anger, depression, denial
- Religion - lost
Post coming out
- Betrayal
- Finding out more about myself
- development of character and who I am
- Dealing with homophobia
- Lost of parents ( they don't accept me being gay )
- Lies building on top of lies
- Searching for an escape
- Religion - gain

I'm also applying to LGBT friendly schools like San Diego State or University of Albany.

I can lie about coming out if I wanted to. I feel it’s overkill especially because of the recent hype of people “coming out”.

First, you only have 650 words so you have very limited time to write your story. You would have to focus on a single event like getting ready to tell them and how they reacted or how it felt to go somewhere or do something after you came out.

You really have write something that reveals what is amazing and unique about you and what kind of person you are inside, aside from being gay.

I just read your previous post. And I think you could also use the essay you wrote about your aunt with some polishing. It is appealing because at the age of 12 your were mature enough to know your aunt couldn’t remember things and instead of getting annoyed, you knew you needed to be compassionate.

The deal with the common app essays is to “Show me, don’t tell me” You got some of that feeling with the other essay.

Consider that its about the ability to write with truth and passion. The subject of the essay really doesn’t matter. GL
