Coming to a crossroads: Film at WUSTL OR NYU!!!

Hi,

I was interested in the film program at WUSTL (tranfer admit for the fall) and I had even posted a thread on here about that. After taking an intro class at another college and receiving an A, the professor suggested that I might look into NYU's program. He had done his MA there. (I'm not sure if that's different from an MFA in film, but that's another issue.) This professor is a nationally nominated and regional emmy winner.

Basically, he said that WUSTL's program is not production based and really hefty writing wise. He didn't seem to particularly care for it (in terms of leading to a fruitful engagement with film) and repeatedly suggested I apply to NYU--I'm pretty sure he meant Tisch. That's really where my problem starts, because I had set my heart on WUSTL and I really am not sure about moving to New York and all the difficulties that could be involved in that. There's also the question of having to wait for more deadlines and reapplying--Tisch has its own unique application process from the regular university.

Anyone been in a similar situation or want to comment, feel free. I know I had corresponded with some NYU student on here transferring to WUSTL for film, but that was the extent of it. Thanks in advance.

for film, id definately go to NYU for it. Washu's film program is studies and not production and word is that its more like english w/ movies more than anything else. Washu is a great school and i love it, but I think it be a lot better for you if you go to NYU if you're set on doing film

yeah, definitely Tisch. one of my really good hs friends is going there next year. as jeffwun said, washu's a great school, but it's definitely going to be more academic than practical in terms of film. the only thing with Tisch is that it's a conservatory, so you'd be doing little else than film. or at least it's like that for drama.
my cousin graduated from Tisch in film, come to think of it. he was nominated for an Oscar in like, 2000 or something for his short film, "Culture," with a few other people. he's a director, and now he travels all over the world doing spots for companies like levis and coke, etc.
basically, if you want a career in film, go to Tisch. you'll get the expertise and the connections you'll need. if you just want to learn about film and study film history and theory, i'd say washu's the way to go.

Thanks everyone.

What originally attracted me to WUSTL's program was the studies aspect, BUT after taking intro to film, I realized that I do not need to study much more without also practicing it on a significant level. Otherwise, it would be like reading about writing poetry and never writing much of my own.

Since I have always maintained a connection with creative things, I had intially felt that it wouldn't hurt me to "read" about film first before practicing it on a serious level or commiting myself to that medium... now, I don't know and feel confused if I made the right decision.
