I am wondering about the value of each of these school's communications major:

-UCLA
-UCSD
-UCSB

Out of these, how would you rank them? Also, if you are a comm major at one of these schools, can you provide me with your opinion on the quality of the undergrad comm major, faculty, and undergrad research opportunities?

Dude, no one can convince me that a comm degree from Berkely is better than a comm degree from UCLA. Perhaps if one was into interpersonal comm, since LA's program doesn't really have much emphasis on this. But as far as job prospects for a mass comm major? and internship experience? and professors who work (currently) in the field? Dude, no way. To get the most out of a comm degree you really have to be in LA or NY. While a small portion of the industry is in SF, it's a very small and not terribly powerful portion.

Annenberg is a different story. I still chose UCLA over it though.

comparing UCLA to annenberg is like comparing the bruin junior varsity football team to the trojan varsity. they simply are miles apart. over in westwood you will be in a relatively small program in a large and great university. on the south side of town you would be in a national top five program, much larger with world class faculty everywhere, in a smaller and also great university.

if money is the issue and you need an in state program i'd consider san diego state. that's about as good as you can get for mass comm, with san jose state and fullerton also in the mix. cal and stanford are best for graduate level mass comm...outside of annenberg of course.

no peel, annenberg has a school of communication that is another unit apart from its journ/mass comm school. the comm unit has some of the leading faculty in the world, luminaries like peter clarke and sandra ball rokeach. they have almost one hundred students in their ph.d. program and the typical undergrad applicant has a weighted high school GPA of 4.1. you'd be hard pressed to find another comm program with those stats.

just a point of clarification for all. sometimes the word comm is viewed as the study of communications, including rhetorical, small group, interpersonal and organizational communication research and theories. in other instances comm is meant to be the application of these via journalism, public relations, advertising, integrated marketing communications--frequently covered by the term "mass comm." both UCB and UCLA are outstanding in the former and somewhat limited in scope in the latter as is stanford. that's why i would place annenberg as the gold standard in the west across the board since they do both at an elite level.
