Our son is Yale College Class of 2019. We have family who are asking about the University Commencement vs. the Diploma Ceremony in the Residential Colleges – specifically, are the graduates lined up and individually named/shake some officiant’s hand (like a traditional high school graduation ceremony) in the University Commencement? Or is that what is done at the Residential College Ceremony? Thank you
At the University Commencement, all undergraduates rise in unison, remaining in their seats, and are proclaimed “graduated” having fulfilled the duties of their degree (or some such language) and are thereby granted a BA or BS. At the more intimate Diploma Ceremony in the Residential Colleges, graduates are individually named, individually stand up, and shake the Head of the College’s hand. If I had to choose one of the two ceremonies to attend, I would choose the Diploma Ceremony at the Residential College – although it is fun to see the pomp and circumstance of the University Commencement.
I agree with @gibby. For the University Commencement, you’ll likely be watching the speakers on jumbotrons-- it’s a huge event. If you’re lucky, you may get a glance at your kid as they walk by in a procession with their residential college classmates (I happened to get a great photo as she glanced back right at me-- totally by luck as she had no idea where we were!). The residential college ceremony is quite small, with just several dozen students, and lots of picture opportunities.
Another vote for the Diploma Ceremony at the Residential College; it shouldn’t be missed. It’s where many special awards and additional degrees are announced.
Thanks, everyone. Happily looking forward to all of this
