Comments on New Forum

I agree that every post or topic should be on one page, like on the old site, instead of having to click to go to another page. That is time-consuming…especially when I’m a college student who is procrastinating- that’s dangerous.

Also, I was wondering… On the old board my username was USChicka. Here it popped up as uschicka. I tried to begin all over as a new user, but it wouldn’t let me, because basically it’s the same name. Is there anyway I can change this? Thanks.

And I say don’t make the post counts a certain school! I say, sure, make it interesting, but do it something like infant, toddler, kid, teenager, college student, or something. I would hate it if I had a high post count and they put me down as some other school. What if they put me down as UCLA or something, when I’m a USC student. No, no, no.

One more thing…

Since my school is under S, it takes awhile to scroll down there. It might help if on top of the page, you can click on the letter of the alphabet your school is under, and it would take you there. Just my two cents. Or you could put USC under the top schools category, and that would make it easier for me, too.

uschicka, you can change how many posts display per thread in your control panel.

this is cool. its kinda like an ezboard but not really

KJOfkw, I think you can go to your panel and change the setting so that you can see up to 40 posts on one page.

Maybe this is mentioned somewhere, but does the CC logo in the left hand corner change colors if you are logged into the site? yellow for on and white for off?

I found that a little while after I posted. You still can’t fit them all on a page, but it’s a lot better than what I first thought.

I’m slowly getting the hang of it here…

lizchup: You’re right. I did change it to display double the number. However, it just means I have to scroll. Only 3-4 show up on a page (on my screen) at one time no matter what number I select. The new site looks nice graphically on the screen, but the on the old format, about 20 one line summaries showed up on a page. It was MUCH easier to briefly skim over the list and pick out the new topics that were of interest. Just minor complaints…I’ve just started getting used to the new format, and it will take awhile.

I hated the new look at first, but now I love it, it’s so much easier to usee, and more importantly faster. I don’t like the # of posts becuase I have close to 100 in 3 days and I don’t want people thinking i’'m addicted (ok so i am addicted but no one has to know that  )

Questions:
What does the red dot mean when under my name when I post?

What does a red star next to a thread mean?

What does the little person under each poster name mean?

What does the CC under each poster’s name indicate?

Susan

I’m slowly figuring out the answers to some of your questions, Soozie.

The little person under people’s name is an icon to click to sent them an AOL instant message, I think. And the CC under their name indicates whether they are online or offline – white indicates offline and yellow indicates online. If you hold your cursor over the little icon, a box appears to show what it means.

I’m not sure about the red dot or red star yet. Someone else will have to pipe in with the answers!

thank you Patsmom

I see what the little man does now. I think I get the CC icon thing.

I still don’t get the red dot with my name.

I am starting to think the red star next to certain threads means that those are ones that I have been posting on already.

Lots of little gizmos here!
Susan

PS…no little box appears when I put my cursor over these things.

The Red Dot means that the user has set his Options to be “invisible”—to not appear when other users click on “Who’s Online” (in the Quick Links). Since “Who’s Online” is disabled, it hardly matters! It is rumored that if ALL of the vB software features were magically turned on, a large mushroom shaped cloud would appear over a five-state area where the College Confidential server used to exist.

You will notice my red dot: it makes me feel invisible. I am really more interested in obtaining a GREEN dot… which will allow me to travel faster than a speeding bullet. Please, somebody give me a green dot!

“PS…no little box appears when I put my cursor over these things.”

Soozie: I think that’s controlled by your browser settings… enable Java or JavaScript (in the broser’s preferences)

Exactly correct, Soozie - with as many threads as we have going here, it’s hard to remember which threads you posted in. So, threads you have posted in are indicated with the red star.

This works on the [New</a> Posts](<a href=“http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/search.php?do=getnew]New”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/search.php?do=getnew) list, too - for anyone who hasn’t found it, it’s on the top menu bar and lets you see the most recent posts across all forums. (The New Posts list is a little similar to the old-style “everything in one topic” forums where all threads were displayed in order of the most recent post.)

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but if it has been, I’d like to iterate it nonetheless.

This forum is based on the vBulletin 3.0 script, right? Then tell me: why you guys intentionally disabled quoting? With such a bustling forum, quotes would be an invaluable tool with which to maintain order and direct your comments accordingly.

Some aspects liek avatars are not necessary and shold be all means stay off, but quoting needs to be re-instituted!

I second Sodfather, like I already suggested before :stuck_out_tongue:

I am LOVING the personal messaging system. it is genius. pure, unadulterated, cyber genius. we can send info to eachother, via CC, and it is fantabulous. great work!

Standard quoting ends up with a lot of needless repetition since not all members delete the quote. This makes threads harder to read, adds redundant text, and consumes bandwidth. Anyone who needs to reference a prior post can easily copy and paste a few words to make the reference clear. Our forum is designed for ease of use and optimal performance under heavy loads, and we felt the benefits of built-in quotes were far outweighed by the costs.

well, thats a relief - i was starting to worry that the red dot indicated the immediate approach of the apocalypse
