Common App Address Question

This is probably going to be a bit of a dumb question, but sometimes, you need to ask dumb questions, so here goes...

I live in a neighborhood that doesn't allow for mail to come to your street address (this is what happens when you live on a mountain). This means that I get all of my mail at a PO Box. For my address, should I just put my street address as my permanent home address and then put my PO Box as an alternate/temporary mailing address?

We've had this PO Box since the 90's and we're not getting rid of it anytime soon. Does that mean for the dates that this address is available, I should say that it's available from now until 12/31/2016 (the latest date you can put for an alternate mailing address)?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I really need an answer for this.

You’ll want to double-check my answer, but I’m 99% sure you should just put your PO box down.

I put my P.O. Box as well; I googled it and read an article that said to use the address that mail would come to. I’d say using your box as the first address and your street as the second line is your best bet.

Huh, okay. Just to be sure, I emailed common app support and they told me not to use the PO Box as my physical street address at all. The guy said that I should use the PO Box in the “alternate mailing address” slot.

I really wish this thing was less confusing.
