Common App: "Do you intend to apply for need-based financial aid?"

Err, I'm not quite sure what they mean. I put no for the previous 5 schools I applied to, but now I'm wondering if I should have put yes. If I put No, does that mean there's no reason for my filing of the FAFSA/ CSS Profile? Should I contact those 5 schools and ask to change my answer? I'm so utterly confused. Thanks.

Do you need need-based aid, or not? If you do, then say so. If you do not, then say no. I’m sorry, but I don’t see what’s confusing about this.

If you don’t need-based aid, but are applying for merit awards, the schools may still require you to file FAFSA.

It’s a very direct question. Are you going to be applying for financial aid from the school? If you answer no, your name wont’ go to the financial aid office as an accepted student who needs a financial aid package put together. If you answer yes, it will, and the office will be looking for your FAFSA and whatever else the school requires for a package. They will then take that info and put together a financial aid package to go with your acceptance letter. If you don’t get accepted, financial aid won’t do anything with the information. That’s why you need to indicate whether you are applying for aid. You won’t get any from the schools if you don’t.
