I’ve been having a hard time figuring out what I want to write my Common App essay about. I was thinking about writing about having racist parents and how their unaccepting values have actually pushed me to embrace diversity more. Does this seem stupid? Thanks!
It’s not a good idea to talk down other people in your essay.
I was going to stress my love for them but put it in the direction of sometimes it’s not always good to listen to your elders despite that montra being stressed. I thought it could highlight independent thinking but that definitely makes sense because I don’t want to seem condescending towards my parents.
Think of the reason they’re requesting this essay.
It’s not Confession. It’s not an audition for a reality TV show. It’s simply “to give them a reason to say yes.”
I think that your topic would make it very difficult to give them that reason. I think you’re going to come off as unloving or overly critical-- it’s hard to criticize someone (no matter how valid the criticism) without coming off that way.
And I can’t see any adcom reading your essay and ending with a warm feeling in the pit of his stomach.
In your shoes, I would find another topic.
Thank you both! I will find a more suitable topic to write about.
