I'm doing the Common Application, and for some schools I need to answer both the Common App essay as well as supplement essays. All else being even, which essay tends to be valued more? To schools care more about what is written on their specific supplement, or is the main essay of the Common App more valuable?

In which spot should I put my strongest essay?

It will likely depend on the school, but I tend to think that, because the supplement essay is specifically asked for by the university to provide further information that the Common App does not, they’ll always look closest at the supplement, particularly if it’s a “Why” question.

I know CMU pays attention to their supplemental essay the most. For schools with elaborate supplementals (Stanford?), I’d imagine they consider those pieces more than the generic Common App topics (although they’re definitely going to be considered).
