Common App prompt 1

Doesn’t the first prompt basically encompass all the other ones? It feels really broad to me unless I’m missing something. Can someone elaborate a little on what kind of people would choose prompt 1?

Thanks

Well I chose prompt 1. I wrote about my struggle with a disorder- it didn’t quite fit any of the other topics. It wasn’t a failure, I didn’t challenge any beliefs, not so much about being a problem than it is about being my background, and didn’t really mark maturity for me. I also assume there’s plenty of people who use prompt 1 to talk about talents- dancing, art, music, etc. Prompt 1 is super general and gives you the most wiggle room to talk about whatever is important to you.

Most people use it to write about a facet of their identity, a talent, or an interest. Something that has had an impact on their lives over time, or something that relates to what they want to do in the future. I don’t see that much overlap actually, except for the last one, maybe. The other prompts are usually used to highlight an instance in people’s lives that shows off their creativity, determination, convictions, problem-solving skills, etc.
