Common App Questions

With the common app, would the teachers give it back to me directly and I would send it in myself and make copies of it or what? Also, even though each school signs and agreement stating that they have to give equal consideration with apps that use the common app and then apps that don't, do you think that it could make difference, like if two students are tied but one used the common app and the other one didn't?

I guess I'm just kind of dumb because I don't exactly know how this works. Like do i give only one rec to my teacher and then make copies myself? And then I fill out the common app once, make copies of them? Or do I have the teachers fill out a sep. common app for each school (actually that would kind of defeat the purpose... so that's kind of a dumb question.. eehhh)

Also, how do I get the school's supplemental stuff for the common app? For instance, some schools give me their OWN app but they also say that they accept the common app. And most schools will usually have supp. stuff for the common app.. how do I get it?

(BTW I know that Stanford doesn't use the common app)

Thanks for all of your help!

I think they're serious about equal consideration. They would probably use ANYTHING else (like, maybe, a grammar mistake or something) to separate two apps before favoring their own app over the common app. On the other hand, that is assuming their own app doesn't allow for some other form of expression not included in the common app (i.e. an extra essay, ap scores). Their own app might include more questions to judge the person with.

Just give your teachers one copy of the teacher rec form each, and they will fill it out once and then make copies. And, they usually just send the forms themselves instead of giving it to you to send. Give them stamped, addressed envelopes.

You can get the supplements either by filling them out on the common app website (it doesn't have them all) or from the college's website. The common app website has links to everything.

questo44, is it possible to copy the forms myself? And then mail it in myself? I know this sounds weird, but I'm kind of nervous because my teacher needs to rec forms by tomorrow and I still don't know exactly where I want to apply to (but all the ones I'm looking in to accept the common app). Could I copy it myself, and then send it in myself?

That's up to the teacher. Ask them tomorrow if they're allowed to give the forms to you to copy and mail. At my school, there's some kind of waiver my counseler is required to sign in that case, but it may be different other places. You could always just give the teachers the envelopes for the colleges you're sure about, and then call them over the break with more schools and their addresses. Maybe give them extra stamped, blank envelopes.

Thanks, that's a very good suggestion.
