Quick question,
My daughter just applied to a bunch of schools on common app and when they asked the question, will you be applying for financial aid, she responded no. I guess that she has heard us over the years saying that we not get aid because we make too much. The advice that we were given by our financial adviser was absolutely apply for financial aid and fill out fafsa for each school even if you think you won’t get aid. Does she need to contact each school and have them change that on her application? or do we just contact the financial aid office and move ahead with fafsa when she gets offers? Hope this makes sense…
Thanks!
also, does that question actually affect admission? yes I am going to request financial aid or no I wont be…
We applied for aid to schools that my S had marked no. Just keep track of the deadlines. COVID changed a lot for everyone and there are scholarships that required a FAFSA. The schools were very understanding. I dont believe that we contacted each school.
Wait a week or so. Do the FAFSA when it opens this week and send the FAFSA to that batch of schools she applied to along with others. Then she can contact them after they email that the colleges’ portals have opened and she can see if they have her application and FAFSA. They will update it for her if they have not already. No point in emailing if the schools have not downloaded her application yet.
She will be able to see if her application has been downloaded in Common App, too.
If an admissions staff member reaches out to her or reached out previously, she can email them directly with the needed update. Each school is different, but some have a more personal touch.
Search whether the school is need-blind. If not, then financial need can affect admission (need-aware).
Use the schools’ Net Price Calculators to see if you’d be eligible for financial aid.
