When I submitted my common app, I put no for "do you need financial aid". (because my mom said so -.-). Now my mom's telling me that I misunderstood her and that I'm supposed to apply for FAFSA. Is there any way I can change my application status for financial aid, or should I submit my FAFSA to the colleges I applied to through common app? Or should I just call the universities and ask? I applied to Northwestern, Carnegie Mellon, Brown, Cornell, and UPenn (problem is UPenn labeled me as a non-financial aid candidate. however my application isn't fully completed yet. Do you think I can ask them to change it?)

Ask your mom what she meant. Does she mean that she wants you to do a FAFSA just to get a Stafford loan? If so, then I don’t think you have to notify your schools.

However, if your mom wants you to apply for financial aid, then not only would you have to submit a FAFSA, but for those schools, you’d also have to submit a CSS Profile. If your parents are divorced, you’ll likely have to include your dad’s info, too.

Others can correct me if I’m mistaken. :)

well she said that I’m supposed to apply for FAFSA because a lot of merit scholarships are offered through that regardless of income, so would I have to submit a CSS Profile too? It wouldn’t hurt right? Thanks a lot for answering :)

Since many of your schools do NOT give merit scholarships, you don’t need to contact those schools.

The only schools that you’d need to submit a FAFSA are the ones that specifically say that they need a FAFSA for merit consideration.

However, it still looks like you’re not applying for financial aid, therefore it doesn’t look like you have to change anything.

Contact the schools on your list that require FAFSA for merit consideration and ask them what you should do. It doesn’t seem like you’re applying for aid.
