Common app short EC writing section - appreciate immedate help!

1) How many words is the limit for the short writing EC section?
2) What exactly is an EC in this context - Can it be a Math or Biology project achievement or should it be a typical EC like sports, etc

Request a definite reply to this or if not can anyone please point me to the links to explain this EC ambiguity ie should it be only sports or can it be a biology project or research activity done optionally outside normal academic activity

thanks

The short answer section limits you by character, not word count. You have 1000 characters, which includes punctuation and spaces.

Your second question is probably best directed to college admission officers, but you certainly have significant latitude in how you choose to reply.

Thanks.

The common app essay is common to most colleges. So, i dont get the part regarding admission officers…

Just want to know if its common to consider passion and research in a subject (academic) as an EC activity?

If the common app main essay focusses on the main EC sport, would it be ok to talk about academic passion and project and research in the EC part? or it might be a repetition of the activity (kind of) in both common app essay and the EC essay

Help appreciated please!

You ask a really interesting question. I think if you participated in some research activity that was not a school assignment then yes you could list it as an EC.

Otherwise, it isn’t exactly an extra curricular unless you spend hours on your own researching a math/bio topic, visiting exhibits that pertain to it and doing more than just in school work.

It might be easier to write your essay on this topic then save the short paragraph for a sport topic.
