Common App Supplement?

Hi, this subset seems dead, but hopefully, someone out there can help me out with this. In the Common App supplement, they say to "limit your response to one or two paragraphs." Does it mean that it HAS to be at most two paragraphs, or can you still go over? I have short paragraphs that flow together better when they're separated into paragraphs, and it's fewer than 1,800 characters (the maximum is 2000 characters in the space given). Would that be ok? Thanks for helping me out!

I just stuck with 2 paragraphs. You should the admissions office and ask them to see if it’s alright

Thanks NYxJon! I did ask the admissions office, and they said that “That should not be a problem if your essay is longer that required”! Yay!

Have you guys read about the whole being international thing about IIT? Those articles kinda backed me up a lil bit.

I haven’t read the article. What was it about?

I couldn’t find the link. But yi was saying that 60-80% of the professors are internationals. And also ~70% of the students are internationals. Mostly Indians.

Also… Fuck there are no girls!

For fall 2010, only 21% of incoming freshmen were international students. Only 9% of incoming freshmen were from Asia and based on my experience over half are probably from China. There is a high percentage of graduate students from India but this has very little impact on undergrads–unless you have a lab taught by a Teaching Assistant, and even there it at least means your TA will speak English.

And while there are fewer women then men, 34% of the freshmen class this year were women.

And 60-80% of the faculty internationals? No way! I’ve been teaching at IIT for 18 years and while there are many–as there will be in any major technical research university–it’s nowhere near that high. And some of them that are probably speak better English than me.

trygstad basically covered everything, but I will just answer the questions from a students perspective.

Yes, there is a large international population, but no, the university is not made up mostly of international students. I would say that 21% is definitely a good indication. However, it is really rewarding to have students from so many different countries to talk to. You can learn about there culture and also their opinion on American culture (which I find to be really interesting).

As for the professors, that is definitely an inflated percentage of international ones. I will say that I have had a few professors that were international and even did research for an international professor, but the percentage is probably more like 30%, maybe a little higher. Nevertheless, all professors have a solid background in the English language and are relatively easy to understand.

You would be really surprised as to how many girls you run into on campus. To be totally honest, to me it seems like there are as many girls as there are guys. But this could just be that more girls tend to gravitate towards my major, chemical engineering (I’m a guy by the way). In the general public, though, of IIT there are more guys than girls, but don’t worry you can easily find a girl if you wanted to.

Good luck in your college admissions and I do hope that you consider IIT for your education.

39% of the school is international. 38% are white.

It is still a great school, though.
