This is in the activities portion of the common app, and the choices are school, break, and year.
What do these mean? I want to put down golf as my activity. I played it all 4 years of high school, but I also participated in summer/spring tournaments outside of school. What should I put?

bump. I’m kind of confused too.

I’m not 100% certain because I’ve never read the definition of those terms anywhere on the CA myself, but how I treat each is:

School - an activity that you strictly participated in during your school’s academic year. These will typically be the activities of school-affiliated sports and clubs.

Break - an activity that you participated in during a break in your academic year (i.e. winter, spring, etc). Sometimes this is the time students take on huge volunteer projects that allow them to spend full days on, or get extra time to travel for more in-depth activities or whatever.

Year - an activity that you participated in all year round regardless of whether your academics were in session or not. This could be a part-time job or even other school-affiliated activities that you had some involvement in all year round (i.e. prepping for the next track season by running/training throughout the summer and fall).

You can also select more than one time of participation so you can clearly indicate that your participated in golf during the school year and for the summer/spring tourneys (“School” + “break” or just “year”, or all three), for example.

Oh, ok. I still don’t see the point in checking all three, since putting ‘year’ would suffice.
Thanks though, that cleared things up.
