Common app "topic of your choice"

(ps. i just made a cc account and it took me eons to find the post new thread button. i feel accomplished...)

anyways, for the common app there are 5 essay choice topics, and then the 6th that says: "Topic of your choice"

so does that translate to "write whatever you want, sonny!"
or
"write about the essay choices given to you with a few tweaks if you like"...
or
"this is a trick question, if you choose topic 6 YOU WILL DIE"

yeah....a little specifics and advice regarding on how to tackle topic 6 would be much appreciated.

Write whatever you want as long as it tells the admissions officer about you.

You can write about whatever, but make sure it reveals something important about you to the admission committee that they can’t learn from the rest of your application.

It certainly is not a trick. Mostly, it just invites you to formulate your own topic and to write on it. Do beware, though, that you should have a clear and powerful theme and not just recount your high experiences as some sort of narrative version of your resume.
