Common application

I'm trying to complete my common application.. and in the essay section, you can see that the 6th choice is "topic of your choice..."

I saw this interesting prompt (you just completed a 300 page autobiography. Submit page 217 to us) and thought it was really interesting and would be easy and fun for me to write. (I already saw somebody who have done this before too and she did well)

Would choosing your own topic be disadvatageous to an entrance to a certain university? I would think not, but I wanted to know if it did make any difference (perhaps with different universities)

Would it be just better to stick with the topics they provide you with?

tht prompt is in UPenn's app.

in the commonapp but when they say "topic", do you have to select a "topic" strictly, or can you respond to prompts you make urself?

You can write about anything you want. That's what they mean by "topic of your choice." Just check the box (is there still a box) or label it with the number that indicates topic of choice so the readers know which prompt you've chosen.
I think if your "autobiography" essay is well done, you could use it as a topic of choice essay for all the common app schools.

Thanks for the reply, ASAP. I saw this prompt in this long list of prompts that my english teacher gave and thought it was pretty neat.. so.. thanks.

But once again.. would colleges really care that I wrote a different topic or a topic that I even just made up?
