Common Application 2008-2009 Questions & Answers

Anything you do with your free time can be considered an EC. More generally, ANYTHING you do outside of school is, by definition, extracurricular.

Does anyone know how to handle senior year activities?

Should I just check off Grade 12 for all the activities that I’ll continue to do next year (tennis, a few clubs, etc.)?

bamaefule, I would probably put that in the “other information” section at the very end. You could also talk about it in your essay.

tnb19, just wait until the school year starts. Who’s to say that you’re continuing all the activities you did previously? If anything, you might cut back. ;D

Just wait..

A letter is a specific kind of award from a particular high school recognizing the students who competed on the teams that represented that school in school-to-school competitions. (My high school letter was in debate, as I was on my high school’s varsity debate team.) The equivalent recognition in a non-American country would be whatever shows that you are a member of the school’s top team competing against other schools. If your school doesn’t have competitions in your sport, you can write that, “my high school does not have a team in my sport” or whatever fits your circumstances. If you are a team captain for your secondary school, you will definitely want to mention that. Try to use the standard vocabulary used in your country, and many admission offices in the United States will have specialists who will know what that means in comparison to United States applicants.

If u do athletics outside the school how do u put that in the athletic supplement?

Take this condition: My English teacher and Physics teacher writes my teacher rec. Now, since my principal is very busy, and my English teacher knows me very well, she goes on and writes my Counselor rec too. Is that permissible?

adrivit: No. Under no circumstances should your English teacher write your Counselor rec.

what do people usually put in the additional info section??

can extra awards, extracurriculars go there, or is just for special circumstances? and does it look bad if it’s left blank!?

Blank isn’t bad. But, it might help you to add something that adds on dimension to your app.

You could put an additional personal essay, list of awards, resume or just a personal circumstances note. I’m sure there’s something you want to add…

You also, if necessary, mention additional info that you think the colleges need to know that’s not expressed anywhere else-- for example, your family moved, you were severely affected by a family issue,…

What if the schools my parents graduated do not have CEEB codes?

I second the question above ^

Also, do you guys think that it will set you apart as an applicant more if you DON’T use the common app? As in, if I just always opt to use a school-specific app, does it indicate more interest??

Also, I’m still curious about resumes. Is it really acceptable at the Ivy level to put things like “see resume” on the app?

My parents went to CEEB-less schools, so I just put the name of the schools.

As for not using the common app, all schools that use the common app claim that they don’t care which app you submit. That being said, I’ve heard mixed messages as to what they really mean; some people told me to use their own application if they have it to show more interest, others said that using the common app makes it easier for them (because that’s what they’re more used to now that more people are submitting it), and others said it really doesn’t matter. Personally, I looked at the school-specific apps and the common app, and just chose the one I liked better :)

If you can’t find the CEEB code just click Not Found on the bottom corner. It should give you the code 0000 which would work.

Hey same question, I got teacher recs done by english and computer sc. teachers… In india, most schools don’t have guidance counsellors as such. Most other teachers don’t know me too personally as they are new and only known me for little over a year, just through classes. Can i get my secondary school report also filled in by my English teacher? The Principal is really really hard to approach personally, and keeps quite busy. :
So is it ok? to get that done by the english teacher too? I could keep tell her to keep the GC rec short, just on the sheet itself… :?

where do we put unpaid internships?? -_-

^^dude you have to read the thread to get answers…

is it okay to exaggerate hours for extra curricular activities?

^why would you ask that? of course it’s not okay, but you can do it if you want. just make a reasonable estimation.

^yeah admission officers are not stupid, if they see numbers aren’t adding up they’ll be suspicious
