Common Application 2008-2009 Questions & Answers

^ Working with a professor on research. Um, volunteering tutoring underprivileged kids? The list goes on and one from the most obvious to the most subtle things. (You might need to figure out that one for yourself!)

What font is that application in?

suppose if you are an international student, and you play ping pong and have won several national awards. Is there any section which you can indicate your interest to represent the college in ping pong? I know schools like mit and princeton or UIUC are gd at ping pong ><

on the section under academic that says list all other secondary schools, including summer schools as well as summer and other programs…
would you put things such as HOBY and other leadership summits (that are not affliated with a secondary school) under there? or would that go under additional information, or in the case of HOBY, under awards?

thanks!

where would you put internships? They have been significant but unpaid.

do we have to fill out all of theM?
such as arts/athletepart??

Where do we turn this common app ?
does it tell you on the school website?

No, you only fill out the supplements that apply to you.

If you fill out the Common App online, you also submit it online. The Common App “sends” itself to the right place.

@snowspud - that is exactly my question! Where do we put unpaid internships now… :(

wow, thanks a ton!

For the supplements. Are they submitted online too, or do we have to send in a hardcopy ourselves?

thanks

This is probably a really dumb question, but I’m going to ask anyway..

If you are submitting more than one common app, do you complete a new common app for each school, or do you photocopy one completed common app and send the copies to the schools. If the latter, how do you keep it from looking like you copied a master common app?

The Common Application was originally designed to encourage photocopies, and colleges don’t mind that at all. This saves time and effort for teachers writing letters of recommendation, and that’s a good thing. These days many applicants who submit the Common Application submit it electronically, and then one can make adjustments in the attached essays before submitting electronically to each college.

for much more information.

this is probably a stupid question but just to make sure: we only need to write one essay right?

There is a short answer question also. There may or may not be essay questions on college-specific supplements to the Common Application. But on the main Common Application, there is one essay on your choice of topic.

tokenadult: suppose if you are an international student, and you play ping pong and have won several national awards. Is there any section which you can indicate your interest to represent the college in ping pong? I know schools like mit, stanford or UIUC are great at ping pong ><

The Awards/Achievement Section. Or..the Sport Section. Possibly. :)

Yes, if you have national-level awards in a college sport from another country, be sure to mention those. Most colleges in the United States have a link on the college website to a page from which you can self-report your athletic accomplishments to the college coaches. Depending on the college and your level of skill, that may help get an athletic “tip” for admission.

I am unable to make an account on the Common App webpage. Does anyone know how to register and create an account? Thanks

I don’t think you can register at the moment. I believe the website is down for maintenance until the 1st of July

In the awards/honors section, should you only mention awards that you’ve earned by yourself or is it also ok to report awards earned as part of a team?
