Common Application 2008-2009 Questions & Answers

MODERATOR NOTE to “Common App” thread:

I’ll merge this thread with: CA Q&A sticky thread.

I have 2 questions regarding recommendations from teachers and counselors:

 1. Do they have to fill their forms out online? Can they just print the teacher/counselor sheet off the website and then mail it in w/the letter?

2) Some of the schools I want to apply to only want one teacher rec. but I wanted to send in two. Can I still email 2 teachers the forms via the CA online or will it only let me email one teacher for that university? If the website only lets me email one teacher, what should I do? [NYU told me they don’t have a problem w/me sending in a second teacher recommendation]

Thanks!

1.) I think this year they’re trying to make it so that it can be online, but you can print it off the website and then mail it with the letter.

2.) You would have to check up on the school. If the school uses the CommonApp, it probably wants 2 teacher recs. You could just print the form out and then hand it to them once school starts, or have them write the letter itself (which doesn’t require a form).

thank you so much dchow08!

I have a few questions:

1) I took SAT IIs in both Math 1 and Math 2. Do I need to self report both, or should I just report the Math 2?

2) For AP grades, do I report both the BC grade and the AB subscore? What about if I got a 5 on BC? Would it be redundant to also post the AB subscore?

3) I took non-AP, college-level classes through my high school and will (hopefully) use them as transfer credits. It is listed on my high school transcript and is on record at the college, which will eventually send them to the college I attend. Do I list the courses under the Colleges&Universities section of “Academics” or just leave it blank and let the transcript report it?

1) If your Math 2 score is higher by all means go with that. Colleges prefer Math 2 any day, Math 1 is too much kids stuff. Be sure to officially send the scores via Collegeboard.

2)No idea about APs

3) I think there is a section which lets you report some courses you took at a college or university. Check it out!

Do I have to self-report all my scores? Either way, won’t the colleges get my scores from ACT or College Board?

1.) Put both for SAT II’s.
2.) Same policy for calc–it doesn’t make sense to put your score for BC but not for AB.
3.) Yes, fill in the section. That’s why it’s there, even if it’s repeated in the transcript it’s okay.

ummy: Self-report SAT and ACT scores anyway. That’s why there’s a section that asks for the scores!!

You have to self report all of 'em. And yes the colleges will get your official scores, but you still gotta self-report 'em!

Isn’t putting both SAT II in one subject a foolish thing to do??

Yes. 10char

Do you attach ANOTHER essay, like your college essay, WITH your Common App, or is the larger personal essay the big essay that everybody talks about?

You only attach one essay. The other essay, where you describe one of your activities, is simply typed in.

is 559 words too long for the commonapp essay?

^For the long one, no.

For the short one (about your activity), yes.

For the common app essay it asks that it has to be over 250 words. Is 500 some too much?

500 is fine. Most of the college essays are around 500 words.

I just printed out the lastest version of the common app and I have a few questions.

On the first page of the application, it asks about US citizenship. I was born in the US and am a US citizen, but do I still have to fill out the “How many years have you lived in the US” question?

Also on the first page, it asks for an IM address. I’m guessing since I don’t have one I should leave it blank?

On the second page under the Family section, I am confused as what to write for the occupation of my mother. She does not work, and stays home to manage our household. Should I leave it blank?

Thanks to anyone that can help!

This should go in the CommonApp 2008-2009 thread.

I would fill it in just in case, although I don’t think it’s necessary. It’s possible that you weren’t born in the U.S., but you’re still a US citizen, so just to let them know that you were born here, you should probably answer it.

Yes, you can leave it blank, or if you’re doing it on paper, you can just put N/A.

The general guideline is to not leave anything blank. If the question they ask isn’t applicable to you, you can just put N/A, just so that they know that you didn’t accidentally skip the question. I don’t know about the answer though.

Thanks! Sorry, I didn’t know there was a Common App thread. :)
