Common Application 2008-2009 Questions & Answers

another question ;-)

if i’m paying the application fee online per credit card, do I pay it before or after I send in my application?

i need to pay that way because we don’t have checks in switzerland ;-)

Most of us pay it through credit card only… And you don’t get that option till you submit your commonapp. Of course, if you want, you can pay me through credit card right away ;)

Three questions:
-I attended a leadership conference in Washington DC, what should I put that under?
-I have done a non-paid internship, where should that go?
-Should “Elaborate on one of your activities..” be something creatively written like a short essay? or should it be a straightforward summary of an activity?

Thanks a lot for your help!!

So, do we send the teacher recs by mail (as some colleges specifically say to do) or should we use the commonapp school forms invite option?

**I’m having a few issues with deciding how to categorize my EC’s in the Activities section. **

1) I’m a life-long member of Girl Scouts…would this go under Community Service or Other?

2) I participated in the National Student Leadership Conference with a concentration in National Security and Intelligence. Would I place this under Career-Oriented as this is my dream profession? Or under Academic?

3) Also, I have 150+ hours of community service, and some are a bit scattered about (5 here, 2 hours there). Should I put them in separately? They all add up, so I don’t want to not mention any.

And finally…

4) The Honors section is leaving me a bit befuddled. Are these awards that I’ve received? Or things like being inducted into the National Honor Society?

1.) What do you think? Do you think it’s community service?
2.) Do you consider it an academic thing? I didn’t even know there was a “Career-Oriented” section.
3.) You could lump them up and give a few short sentences explaining what you did. I don’t think they care so much about all the little specific things you’ve done.
4.) Any academic honors or distinctions you have received go there.

MORE RECOMMENDATION QUESTIONS

Under the Common Application teacher recommendation, there is a section at the very end which asks for an evaluation, and the teacher can attach a letter. Is this where the teacher can attach a basic letter (with the school’s logo, etc.) along with the actual form?

DOES THIS ALSO APPLY FOR THE COUNSELOR REC?

Yes to both of your questions.

What exactly is common app?

one application that you fill out with an essay that works for many different schools so that you dont have to waste time filling it out 15 times over

so if i write an essay for common app i dont need to write one for the college that im applying to?
will common app essay replace it? or do i have to write both?
& do i only pick one topic from common app topic options?

Okay, this might be kind of harsh, but go through this thread and read through the entire thing.

@conf123: You have 78 threads to ur name, mate! Fooling us, are yeh?

Hi question for everyone…..

SECTION: Honors briefly list any academic distinctions or honors you have received since the 9th grade or
international equivalent

Can I list Honors class I elected? Such Chemistry, LA, Horner (10th &11th grade)
Or this section is only Homers award?

Do you list as NHS candidate even you did not elected as finalist?

Because otherwise I am looks like empty this section…….

That place is for Honors coveted. I don’t know what Homers is. NHS goes in there, I guess. How is your English so abysmally poor? Have you given the SAT or TOEFL yet?

Lol! :)

I took sat…and i live in east.
anyway, do you think I can list my elected honer class in this section?
thanks

No. Honors classes go into the class selection section; they should not be repeated here. Any honor roll, dean’s list, etc. is fine.

If I am applying online, how do I attach a “resume” without having to write in the additional information section? Do I send the resume separately by mail? The additional information section does not have enough space and will not accomodate charts.

Attach a file for the additional information section.
