Common Application 2008-2009 Questions & Answers

that’s a good idea adrivit

Trinitrondel: Don’t restate!

what is the difference between “counselor’s name” and “counselor’s title”?

I wish to know the answer to 19921992 and adrivit’s questions, too.

@sev1991 -

“what is the difference between “counselor’s name” and “counselor’s title”?”

The counselor’s name would be Mr. John Doe. His/her title would be “Official Guidance Counselor” or “High School Guidance Counselor” etc etc

Eek, I’m confused about the paper recommendations + online CommonApp thing, too! I can’t just have my teacher send in my stuff…? I’m planning on asking a teacher to write me recs tomorrow (and she has very specific guidelines on her website; she wants the printed forms), so I kind of need to figure this out before I go to sleep tonight, lol.

Where can I find my ID?

Eh, okay, it seems from other threads that the ID is not necessary. I would like to help colleges out and make it easier for them, but whatever.

New question: Will schools that require one recommendation accept two to three?

They surely will.

The ID isn’t necessary? Could you quote the source please? Thanks!

Standard advice for recommendations: do not send extras unless they add a dimension to the admissions’ committee view of you.

So, if you have two or three teachers all of whom will say they saw you walk on water, send only one. However if you know that one of them will say they saw you change water into wine, too, add it to the mix.

This is more likely to happen across disciplines: one teacher knows how well you write, another how carefully you peform experiments. Or, perhaps, one teacher knows you as a coach or advisor in addition to (or instead of) as a student in their classroom. If you think a teacher can provide particular insight into an extra dimension, do not be afraid to request that they emphasize this in their letter.

The Common App Online only allows required recommendation submission online at this time. If a school (like mine) requires one and the guidance counselor’s (part of the secondary school report form) fulfills that requirement, you won’t be able to have teachers submit supplemental recs online.

We’re hoping this will change in the future, but for now, extra recs have to come in another way. Check with your schools to see how they prefer to get them. UVa has gone paperless, so we ask that everything be faxed (we have a special fax server that automatically puts the fax into our document system). I imagine that other schools might have similar systems set up.

How do i differentiate between a supplemental recommendation and a teacher recommendation? obviously, a math team coach wouldn’t evaluate me as a student…

“Supplemental” refers to anything that isn’t required.

would I just send a letter, or have them fill out a certain form on commonapp?

so for the topic of choice, do we state the question at the top of the essay and then start writing? or do we just write?

I’m the president of the Spanish Honor Society at my school, so I would like to put that under activities because of the leadership position I hold. However, I thought that any honor societies (NHS, EHS, etc.) should be placed under “Honors.” Where should I put it? Should I duplicate it?

For the “Activities” section, what kind of “details” should you list?

For the “Honors” section, does receiving school awards such as the AP Spanish award count? I was also awarded with the APA award from my school, but would that still be considered at the school level even though it’s a nationally recognized association?

Thanks to anyone who can clear all this up for me!

Hey, in the common app if we tick the box saying that we’ll be sending a music supplement, it asks us to fill the form there itself, but then how will we submit the recording CD… isn’t it better to fill the form on paper and mail it with the cd through courier? But if you mention on your app, then it activates the e-form… what should i do?

spidey: I guess you need to upload the music or video file.

deviations: 1. Honors means awards coveted. Got nothing to do with ECs.
2. Whatever pertains to your activities. Figure!
3. Yes.

hamsi2004: Any way you want to. A title is not required, but good if you provide one.

adrivit, no it says in the e-form that mention an online link where u can view ur recording… no uploads allowed.. but the colleges mention that they want CDs

I’m not sure I understand…are you talking about a supplemental recommendation? I believe I wrote elsewhere that some send us a form and some send a letter. It doesn’t really matter all that much.

Most students just paste their essay in. When there’s a choice of many topics (our supplement essay has choices), it’s nice when the student rewrites the question at the top, but if they don’t, the choice is evident as soon as we start reading.

Check with each college. We have specific instructions for our arts supplements and Common App has a link to them on the main UVa page within their website, but that might not be the case with all schools.
