Commonapp Essays

Do common app essays change every year or is it possible to get started early? (now or in the summer)

I'm almost certain it stays the same each year. Nevertheless, I recently discovered that CommonApp.org is releasing a renovated website near the beginning of July. I would suggest waiting until then to see if they've changed anything. Until then, worry about other aspects of your application. Peace.

So pretty much everything stays the same every year on the Common App? I'd really like to get most of it done before the schools year starts...

I will say it again: the common application has nearly replicated itself each consecutive year for the past few years. HOWEVER, the common application is also releasing a NEW website in July, so there is a CHANCE that the common application could change for us. Like I said, just wait until July.

Maybe sketch out some ideas now, but wait until the new website drops to finalize your writing.

Be warned, however- I started my essays early last year (like June), and by the time it came time to apply, I reread them again and hated them. Each essay underwent about ten more revisions before I was satisfied. You will not be able to write something now and completely forget about it until you send it, if you have any vested emotion in your writing. Things change, and you change. You will probably want to tweak your essay until the last minute.

I just check on the site:
WILL THE 2007-08 COMMON APPLICATION ESSAY TOPICS BE THE SAME?
Yes; the essay prompts will be the same:
Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you.
Discuss some issue of personal, local, national, or international concern and its importance to you.
Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you, and describe that influence.
Describe a character in fiction, a historical figure, or a creative work (as in art, music, science, etc.) that has had an influence on you, and explain that influence.
A range of academic interests, personal perspectives, and life experiences adds much to the educational mix. Given your personal background, describe an experience that illustrates what you would bring to the diversity in a college community, or an encounter that demonstrated the importance of diversity to you.
Topic of your choice.

so even if the site does go through a make over, the essays will be the same
