I found that virtually all schools asked my child where she would be applying. Also, I expect that there will be some communication between admissions offices and my child's school. What are the risks/advantages of directly or indirectly indicating to a school where it ranks in our list? Is it better to just equip the school counselors to indicate why each school is on the list?

Great Question!!! I hope there are some parents of current students or school admissions counselors who can give us guidance.

Supposedly, to protect their yield the schools may make educated guess on whether you would accept their offer of admission. They may waitlist or even reject an otherwise admissible applicant if they believe you won’t attend anyway. I can’t say how extensively this practice is and how you can avoid the “trap”. The advice I got was to let the school know what you like about them and imply why it is reasonable that you’d accept their offer if there is one in the future.
