My sister is looking to transfer out of her current school to a school that would offer her more opportunities. Her current GPA is 3.60 but she intends on getting that up to a 3.71 by the end of the semester. Right now she has completely 29 credits, by the end of the semester it will be 44. She is on 2010 council, RHA, Springfield school volunteer, alpha lambda delta, works on-campus, worked at a burrito shop and retail last year as well. She wants to transfer to a college in the city, preferably in LA or NYC but Boston, Chicago and DC are okay too. She would like to go to USC. What are some other good schools in communications/ broadcast journalism in the city? Is USC realistic?

NYU is also being considered

Well, the average transfer GPA for USC IS 3.7, so she's right in there. I think it's realistic. I'm a Communications major as well and yes, USC has one of the best programs for it.Good luck :)

she read that the avg transfer gpa is 3.57. is nyu comperable to usc and does she have just as good a chance?

That's dated to 2005, I went to a Transfer session at USC about a month ago and the admissions counselor said 3.7 is a good start, as the cutoff starts around there every year. [Unless there's legacy or the applicant is borderline but really active in some EC.]

I think NYU is really good as well, given that they also have an entire school devoted to this specific area and it's pretty well rounded in its approach. (Steinhardt)

In picking my schools, I looked for Universities that had entirely spearate schools as opposed to just "departments" within their school of letters and arts, bc I feel like I'd get lost, and considered just 'another' liberal arts major when in fact Communications intergrates both business and requires a proficient knowledge of language. Hope that helps.

Emerson is Boston is very very strong in those areas as it a college which focuses on communication type things. (Journalism, Advertising, Creative Writing , etc ) It would be safer than NYU or USC and it might make a good fall back.

p.s I just remembered, the University of Texas @ Austin has a good communications program as well. [even tho it's USC's nemesis :))

thanks everyone! Is there a website that ranks the best communication programs?

BU also has a school--the College of Communication.

GWU School of Media and Public Affairs in DC.

not a major city, but Mizzou has a great communications/journalism program, I think Syracuse does too

Northwestern as well but that will probably be a reach

USC gets a lot of transfers from California community colleges. That's largely where the 3.7 comes from. If you are from another 4-yr college, it should be easier than that. After all, a 3.7 from a 4-yr college is definitely harder to get than 3.7 from CC.
