Communications/Business Major Advice

Hello,

I am currently planning to major in business at UR, but I don’t know what I want to concentrate in, also, I am a freshman. I am possible interested in social media management and am wondering if I should just stick with the business major (maybe a marketing/finance double concentration) or if I should minor in communications or major in communications and minor in business? Any advice would help.

IMO, majoring in business and minoring in communications will make you more likely to be employed than the other way around.

I would agree with the previous post. The business degree is more practical and will take you further. Nevertheless, I I would explore the Jepson Leadership School. Leadership and interpersonal skills are lacking in most professions. I would recommend that major and a graduate degree in business after you have gained some job experience. Most businesses want you to get a MBA. Why would you want to take the same coursework a second time? Embrace a new subject area.

Does richmond have a communications major? I only see journalism and rhetoric and communication studies

Rhetoric and communication studies is essentially a communications major. Don’t get too caught up over the name of majors at different schools, since they vary. What you’re learning in the courses is more important. For example, UR’s healthcare studies major is what many schools call public health.

I see you’re a new member. For future posts, please make your own thread. It is impolite to take over someone else’s thread with a new question (“hijacking”). Also, bumping old threads is not allowed.

Guinea … I think bumping an old thread can be a good thing if the topic is relevant, so the prior thread information is already there. What do you mean by “not allowed.” On the other hand, just asking what someone did 4 years later that could be found using search is the bump I don’t like.

@Daddio3 Moderators will close threads that are revived after they have died out or a consensus has been made (particularly ones that are several years old). Old threads are supposed to be used for reference purposes only.

But perhaps I was too harsh on this one; you’re right, this thread isn’t that old and the question is related. I just wanted to inform our new community members of some of the etiquettes of the forum.

I wasn’t criticizing at all – just curious if it was a rule or etiquette. And someone could certainly link an old thread for completeness. I just noticed the other day someone re-opened an old thread, and I thought I was sure glad the context from earlier discussions was above it. My next thought was they really weren’t supposed to do that.
