Is a communications major a safe alternative to a business major if i were not to be accepted to the school of business at any given school? Arent most of the classes quite similar? Would a communications major with a certificate of business be a good alternative if i still want a business related career?

my d is in the same position; in some schools she applied to the business schools if they had a bend towards communication; others that were extremely strong in communications have a business bend....it really depends on the school...Which ones are you looking at?

You might try transferring into the business school later in college, provided you work hard to have a high GPA your freshman [and sophomore] year(s).

I would highly recomend a business major over communications. My mom works as a VP of marketing at a major hospital in my area and every year she sees hundreds of communication major graduate's resumes fall across her desk. Basically, theres A LOT of communication majors out there and very few job positions, and those few job positions don't pay very well. If you're really interested in communications, I suggest majoring in marketing, which is very similar and will allow you more freedom when looking for a job.

I'm looking at UW-Madison and U of Iowa

don't know about Iowa, but Uw-Wisconsin is well rated for both communications and business....at UW you are admitted as a communication interest, not directly into the school...you need to apply later...not sure about the business school....

I depends on the school. Some places they are more similar than others. Often the communications will be similar with some marketing and management courses. And, often at some schools the students actually take those courses in the business school even if they are a communication major. The real issue may be the nature of the communications school. Is it more toward journalism, radio and tv, and advertising, or more analytical in that courses focus on information processing aspects of communication. So unfortunately the answer I would give is that it all depends.
