Communications major, ____________ minor?

As a communications major, is it beneficial to minor in psychology and film? Originally I was set on just minoring in film, but I realized that I still have an interest in psychology. What are the benefits of minoring in both?

Benefit? You have an interest in both, so you’ll likely enjoy the material you are learning, which will make for a much more enjoyable college experience.

My theory about minors is that you should only bother with one if it is an area of personal interest that you enjoy studying.

If you are asking for any benefit to your resume, minors don’t really add too much (though it will indicate other interests). You don’t have to minor to take the courses as electives. For example, I want to study quantum physics in college so I will only take the physics prereqs that get me to there and ignore any of the other courses that might get me a minor.

I think one of the most beneficial minors with communications is business. You may not always find yourself on the creative end of things or may need to actually make some $$ from that creativity.

Minors only “add” or “benefit” insomuch as they can teach you another set of skills or core knowledge that can make it easier to do your job in some ways. So if you’re interested in both, go ahead and do both. It’s also possible to just take a bunch of classes in either without officially minoring.

@eb23282 by benefit I meant towards my career in the long run. I was just wondering if my minor(s) would also be beneficial skill-wise in addition to my interest in them!

@happy1 Got it, thanks! I’m considering double minoring.

@XtremeBlaze777 I understand the taking courses as electives part, but what did you mean by ignoring other courses to “get a minor?”

@Empireapple Definitely considered doing business, and you prove a good point in making money off my creativity. I just don’t see myself enjoying business classes that much—oh well! Maybe I can take some business courses as electives?

@juillet So minoring is more of an “in-name” sort of thing (kinda)?

What type of information do you think you would be communicating in a communications career? If you would like to work doing communication in politics, then political science would be useful. Working in corporate communications? Then business or Econ would be good. Communications in high tech? Then computer science. Environmental studies or health might also be useful if your communication interests are in those areas.

Just an example I was giving. Take electives that you want; if they happen to complete a minor great, otherwise don’t worry about it and just take the courses that interest you regardless if they get you a minor.
