Communications Major at Cornell?

This is more for a friend whose interested, not me (just so people don't think I'm transferring out of ILR haha).

He's thinking of applying ED to Cornell, and just wanted some insight into the actual major. How good is it perceived in the industry?
How prominent is the networking?
How would you rate the program as a whole?
How is the CALS experience?
How competitive are admissions?

He's thinking of going into some form of broadcasting, I believe.

If anyone has some more insight, that'd be great.
Thanks!

Isn’t comm the joke major at most schools?

Why should communications be a joke major?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/cornell-university/539471-communications-major.html</a>
this may or may not help, not sure

i don’t really know anything about the program though but if your friend hasn’t seen
http://www.comm.cornell.edu/docs/fullcurriculumbrochure09.pdf</a>
that may be interesting to him

And yeah, I don’t see why this would be a joke major.

" At my university, communications is for the people who either aren’t good enough for the business program or get kicked out of the business program. I’m sure it depends on the university completely, and employers, at least the good ones, will know if you go to a college with a reputable communications major. "

From another cc thread on comm.

“I was a Computer Science major. I got out once it got really hard. I made it up to C++. Then I couldn’t do the math — it got really confusing. I switched to Communications, which is a ridiculous major — let’s be honest,” says Jimmy Fallon.

But yeah it just happens to be the major that most athletes major in and has become more or less the “joke” major for people who are not that cut out for academics.

I went to an info session in for communication. The professor told a story about one student who has an internship with Barbara Walters or some other famous national news broadcaster. So it does carry some weight in the industry.

From what I’ve heard, Communications does tend to be considered a joke major for people who take it just because they don’t know what else to major in and it seems easy.

However, my friend actually knows he wants to go into some form of broadcasting/journalism.

Tmk: I already showed him the link, but thanks!

More importantly, the views on communications are slightly what I wanted to address: Is it perceived to be a joke major at Cornell as well?

GooPV: Thanks for anecdotal evidence!
