Communications Major risk?

Hi i got admitted to UCSB as a transfer and I visited it and loved it, however I got admitted to pre-communications and from my understanding when I finish the Pre reqs I can apply to the major. I have 3 classes to take until I am eligible. I am wondering how competitive that major is and what my options are if I don’t get into the major. Am I just screwed at that point?

Any feedback is appreciated thanks!

Hey!
I’m in the same situation myself, I was admitted as Pre-Communications major because I’m missing two pre-reqs. I’m planning on taking those two classes during the summer but I’m scared because in the Communications Department website they recommended not to take Comm 88 and 89 together. I don’t know what to do if I should risk it or not

Hi! I’m a third-year Communication major right now. You do need a 3.0 average in the prerequisite classes to get into the major, which can be a bit challening to achieve if you take more than one of the prereqs at the same time. I personally took Comm 1 during the summer and found it very easy, then Comm 88 in the winter of my sophomore year and Comm 89 in the spring.

The difficult part about Comm 88 is the intensive group research project, and the difficult part about Comm 89 is the huge number of theories you’re learning about. I’m not sure that taking both at the same time in the shortened summer session would be the best idea.

@gaucho17 hi so assuming I finish the 3 pre reqs I need and I go to apply to the major is there a chance you can be rejected from it? And if so do you know if it’s difficult to get into

@gaucho17 do you recommend to take Comm 89 over the summer verses Comm 88?

@Lumpias - You need a 3.0 GPA average in those Comm 1, Comm 88, Comm 89, and PSTAT 5A/Comm 87. If you have that, you’re in. This can be hard to attain.

@ChristianLucas - I would recommend taking Comm 89 in the summer over Comm 88. You’ll probably want a full 10 weeks to complete the research project in Comm 88.
