I’m a parent nearing 40 who wants to finally pursue a writing career. I still don’t know which major is best : communications,journalism, or English. I also don’t know what kind of writing career I want and don’t want to limit options. Any advice is appreciated
Communications or English would be better since they don’t limit your options as much as journalism does.
IMO English is the best choice since you’re undecided.
Having majored in both journalism and communications, I would pick journalism if I had to do just one. But honestly it depends on the specific courses offered by the institutions you’re considering. It’s definitely worth your while to find the college catalog and see exactly what the course of study is and what electives are offered. Good luck!
English exposes one to writing & literature already written by genre. Journalism is a medium of reporting day to day events.
I was sort of in the same dilemma as you and I chose communications for the broadness felt like english was more academic and journalism too narrow
