Which would be more beneficial if i wanted to be a journalist/freelance writer? English is obviously good for many things, but communications seems to be more specific in the area i want to get into. I'm also thinking about double majoring or minoring in history and/or religious studies.

No journalism department? If you want to be a journalist or a freelance writer, it would be most beneficial for you to learn how to right like a journalist. Dissecting a piece of literature won't give you experience with that style. Honestly, I don't think it matters what you major in as long as your writing shows that you can write. If you want to freelance in a particular area, I would consider taking more classes (maybe a major/minor) in that area. If you want a great resource for freelancing, etc., PM me and I'll send you a link :)
