Community College Credit

Does anyone know if Rice accepts community college credit? I took Art 100, College Algebra, and College Trig with my local CC and I was wondering if any of that would transfer over? I looked online but I couldn't find any information.

Not sure that those courses would transfer, and if they did, whether or not they'd get you anything. What are you planning on majoring in? If I knew that, i'd be better able to help you out.

Essentially, what you have to do in order to get credit for courses is to present a syllabus of the course you're presenting for transfer credit and get the course transfer approved by the appropriate academic department, but if you let me know a little more about what you plan to study, I'd be able to give you more info on the likelihood (and even whether it's worth trying) of getting credits transferred.

Furthermore, no credit is given for college or "dual-enrollment" courses IF the course was used to satisfy a HS graduation requirement. For example, I had college-level credit for government, but since it was also a HS graduation requirement in Texas I couldn't transfer it to Rice.

Hmmm... I don't know if my math classes would count as a graduation requirement. I don't think that they would because you only need three years of math (maybe less, Arizona isn't known for being that great in education) to graduated and that was my fourth year. Also, I am not sure what I want to major in. I might do Spanish (maybe not because I just found out I got a 3 on the language exam :( ...) I really don't know though. Is art in one of the distribution requirements? If it is then I was hoping that my art class would go to helping get rid of some of those requirements. I don't really care about my math classes transfering because I am going to end up taking more math in college so it isn't really going to get me out of any classes.

Okay. Those math classes likely won't transfer, and it's probably not worth the hassle to petition the math department if you already intend to take more math classes.

ARTS 205, IIRC, is the basic drawing course at Rice and can be taken for distribution credit for group I. It's entirely possible that your art course would transfer, but you'd need to scrounge up a syllabus from that class and present it to the ARTS department at Rice once you get there.

(Also... on that language AP, you typically have to be a native speaker to get a 5, and I took eleven years of Spanish and ended up with only a 4. Don't sell yourself short on having gotten a 3 on the Spanish Language AP. It just means you haven't been speaking Spanish since you were 6!!! Don't rule out majoring in Spanish just because of the AP scores.)
