So i graduated this year from HS and I wish to go to a community college near me so i can transfer to a four year institute. Is it a good idea to apply for when i start attending?. FAFSA is where I will apply.

It may seem like a weird question but for some reason I imagine that if i do options will reduce, become harder to get more benefits when i ask for more later during transferring time. The other side of my mind says the opposite- it's not a bad choice because more options will be available.

Can you afford CC without any aid? What is your family’s income level? Will you qualify for any aid other than loans via FAFSA? You can get the aid/loans now and save it for the years you will need it more. If you qualify for any part of a Pell Grant, there is a yearly maximum and you won’t get more later each year because you didn’t apply for it now. Same with loans, if you don’t take them now, you won’t get more junior and senior year. Generally you can get Pell for 12 semesters.

Benefits that are available through FAFSA aren’t cumulative. One can qualify for x amount per year for the Pell Grant. One can qualify for x amount per year in subsidized student loans. You will not be able to get a larger Pell Grant due to not receiving it during your years at community college, nor will you be able to get a greater amount in subsidized loans if you go without them for the first couple of years. You should definitely apply. If you apply and decide that it’s in your best interest to not take it (I can’t imagine why you wouldn’t), then you simply don’t accept it.
