Community College to Haas School of Business

I’ve always wanted to go here. Currently, I am planning to attend to double major in Marketing & Finance. I am 25 years old, born and raised in California and still currently live here. I have done a lot of my prerequisites at a community college in the past but I never finished. I am starting again in the Spring of 2018 to finish the rest of my prerequisites for business administration major. I plan to get straight A’s this time around. Before I had A’s & B’s & 1 C…My question is:

  1. I want to do an internship. Does anyone know where in the Silicon Valley provides the best internships opportunities for business administration majors especially those that Haas would look favorably towards?
  2. What are some on-campus activities that I should spend time on that will increase my probability of being accepted into Haas School of Business?
  3. Any other general tips to get accepted into The Haas School of Business as a California community college transfer student?

PS: Does being this old hurt my chances of being accepted? I was doing my own eCommerce business that generated almost $500,000 in sales in a year and a half from 2016 to 2017 and spend over $100,000 of my personal money on social media ads.
I know I should probably include this in my application letter (I have actual proof too), however, how would Haas School of Business know that I am telling the truth?

Regarding age, https://haas.berkeley.edu/Undergrad/class_profile.html says that the average age of transfer students to UCB business is 22, with a range of 17-37 (versus average of 20 and range of 19-21 for those who started as frosh at UCB and applied to business from there).

In general, transfer students from community colleges are more likely to include older and non-traditional students than those who entered a university as frosh.

Shanon Gao,
I have done a lot of research on Haas-UC Berkeley. They break down your application like this:
50% = Grades/GPA
35% = Essays (4 Questions)
15% = Extra Curricular Activities

— For your application to even be read by Haas, you must complete 100% of THEIR prerequisites. If you’re missing 1 prerequisite, then Haas will close your application & move to the next app without reading anything further.

— Prerequisites must not have been taken more than 5 years ago otherwise you will need to repeat the prerequisite.

— Internships: Anything that is business related. Accounting firms, Banking firms, Consulting firms. Your college’s Transfer Center will have a list of internships available. Also, it’s OK if you want to skip the internship and just work for a business related employer. You don’t have to be an intern.

— On-campus activities: Does your Community College have a PBL club? Any club that is business-oriented will suffice but you need to hold an Executive Office position in that club. i.e. President, Vice President, Treasurer, etc.
Also, volunteering for Habitat for Humanity either through your college or the organization itself. Anything that involves you giving back to the community. Tutoring on campus, etc. These are all options.

— Your essays should include the 4 Principles of Haas. http://haas.berkeley.edu/mission/principles.html
1-Question the Status Quo (Don’t just accept what everyone is doing; Create your own invention/pathway)
2-Confidence Without the Attitude (Be confident, but don’t be cocky & conceited)
3-Students Always (Always be willing to learn new things throughout life instead of stopping after you graduate)
4-Beyond Yourself (Giving back/Volunteering)
Since there are 4 essay questions & 4 Haas Principles, you could include 1 Principle into each essay question.

— Being Old: No, UC Berkeley & Haas prefer their transfer students to be older. They love to hear about hardships that you have experienced in life & how you turned that hardship into a positive. As long as you turned it into a positive. They want to know that if any challenges come your way, you’ll be able to figure out how to handle it.

Transfer Students are allowed to apply to Haas unlimited times every Fall. Just change your essay answers & add more EC’s and work full-time during that year of waiting until the next Fall. However, you won’t be able to apply if you already transferred to another 4-year college since they only take transfer students from Community Colleges. So it’s a gamble to wait a year but it’s an option. Berkeley Freshman & Sophomore are allowed to apply to Haas only 1 time. So Transfer students have the advantage of unlimited attempts.

UC Berkeley has “CAL Day” every year in April. Every major/department puts on their own event on CAL Day. Haas usually starts at 9 AM and it’s on a Saturday. They have a panel of students & the Admissions staff talk about what is expected & what to focus on. There are over 400 events that take place on CAL Day & it is invaluable to attend.

If you would like to email me, I can send you Haas’ agreement with Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill that lists every prerequisite Haas requires. DVC has an excellent reputation for transferring its students to UC Berkeley.

http://www.assist.org/ will give you this information for any California CC, any UC or CSU, and any major at the UC or CSU.

I would be going to Foothill College…I don’t think they have an agreement with Haas. I would love to see the prerequisites thank you!! What is your email?

I’ve looked at assist already under uc berkely business admin and it only has 2 class requirements

Foothill has a lot more than 2 class requirements. I provided Assist’s link below for Haas & Foothill.

No CCC has a special agreement with Haas. You need to complete all the requirements, have stellar ECs and a high GPA.

@Ohm888 is correct. There is no special agreement by Haas to admit so many number of students from a CC. The only agreement is what CC courses are transferable to Haas for course credits. Just do your best in the EC’s and strive for a high GPA (>3.7+) to have a decent chance.

Haas is smalllllll… :). The chances of being accepted well is low as hell. You’ve got to have good essays, the questions when I was applying to Berkeley were like picture the fisher company and tell me how to boost profits. Basically, they’re looking for exceptionally smart people. I don’t think internship experience matters when you say you did 500000 in revenue, I suppose you had a drop shipping website. Since you’re smart enough to do that, if you try you’ll get into Haas. But it’s not like it’s the best program out there. There are certain jobs which pay a lot of money and require a lot more than what Haas offers. If you do the minimum Haas finance bachelor of science curriculum, you’ll have difficulty getting into Haas master of financial engineering program.

The point I’m making, is you’ve got to think long term. The reason I go on this tangent is because a bachelors degree is just a stepping stone into the long term career. And you’ve got to plan your coursework accordingly.
