Haas School of Business at UCB transfer 2018 EC advice??

Hey, everyone!

I am a California CC freshman wanting to transfer to Haas in fall 2018. As far as the GPA goes, I’m pretty confident that I’ll maintain anywhere from a 3.9-4.0. My main concern is my EC past. Before I elaborate on that, here’s a little about my life so far (also my personal insight questions story lol). I was born in India, I lived there for 10-11 years before moving to England. My transition to England was definitely not a smooth one. There was a gigantic cultural and lingual barrier between me and others of my age. All of my classes were special ed. But then things started to go my way eventually. In short, the 5 years that I spent in England before moving to California both, knocked me out mentally while simultaneously providing me with the strength to get back up every single time. My move to California was much smoother than the prior. One thing I’ll regret the most about my HS experience is not getting involved in anything. I took a long time to adapt to the California education system. I didn’t have anyone to make me realize the importance of ECs on an application. I had to do all the research myself. By the time I realized how big of a mistake I had made by not getting involved, I was entering the 2nd semester of my senior year and it was too late.

Now that I’m at CC, I have been approved to become a Math tutor, and I’ve also applied for a marketing internship. I’m thinking about running for treasurer for the alpha gamma sigma honors club next semester. What else could I do to enhance that EC portion of my application when I apply for Haas this time next year.

Thanks!!

First off, you have a great story. Your grades are great but really I think they’re most important to just be in the “normal” GPA range … and from there, they move to your ECs, your essay. etc.

But your biggest strength will be your story, to find ways to leverage that in your essays.

ECs in high school are irrelevant as a transfer. They only care about what you did in community college. As for anything else for ECs, just find ways to be involved on campus or in the community. It doesn’t have to be business related, just something you’re interested in and that you can hopefully somehow demonstrate impact.

Thanks! You really boosted my confidence.

what is the “normal GPA range”? 3.5 + ?

Average gpa for transfer students - 3.93 (here is the link - data is a couple of years old, but it give you an idea: http://haas.berkeley.edu/Undergrad/class_profile.html). Those starting at Cal definitely have an advantage, GPA wise.

Midd 80% is 3.56-4.0 with an AVG of 3.93
