Community College to UC (graduating with AS degree in BIO but pursuing CHEM in UC)

Hello everyone,

As you can see, my question is based on the title itself. I am planning to graduate with an AS degree in Biology in my community college but pursuing Bachelor degree in Chemistry in UC. My goal is to go to veterinary school and graduate school (PhD in Chem).

Will this be a bad idea (graduating with an AS degree but pursuing a BS degree in a different field)? Well of course, I am prioritizing my Chemistry major. I am first taking the required courses in Chem such as GChem, OChem, Calc series, and Phys series. Then, I'll be taking Bio series last with Phys series.

Also, I've been planning my schedule for the whole time I'll be spending here in community college. Will it be bad if I take two science courses with 1 Math course which has an overall 15 units per semester or take one science course, 1 Math course or 2 science course and a GE course? I have seen some advice in some UC campuses for science major stating that student shouldnt only take science courses per term because it can ruin their gpa.

By the way, I am working part time and have bunch of responsibilities at home (fetching family members and such).

Here's a sample of my schedule (remaining classes):
Fall 2012:
MATH 400 (5)
CHEM 420 (5)
PHIL 352 (3)

Spring 2013:
MATH 401 (5)
CHEM 421 (5)
POLS 302 (3)

Fall 2013: 12
MATH 402 (5)
PHYS 411 (4)
MATH 410 (3)

Spring 2014:
PHYS 421 (4)
MATH 420 (4)
BIOL 400 (5)

Fall 2014:
PHYS 431 (4)
BIOL 410 (5)
ENGWR 302 (3)

Spring 2015:
BIOL 420 (5)
STAT 300 (4)
ENGRD 310/312 (3)

UC’s don’t care what your AA/AS degree is in or even if you have one or not. They’re going to look for the required prereqs and GPA. If you have prereqs completed for a Chem BS and an AS in something else it doesn’t matter. I have an AA in social and behavioral sciences and I’m a Phil major at UCSD and I’m also taking premed classes. SD probably has no clue I have an AA.

As far as the course load, that varies from person to person. My friend takes 25 units at a CCC with science and math classes and gets straight A’s, then again all he does is school. You’ll find out the first semester what you can handle with all your outside commitments.

A few things I noticed
CHEM 420 (5 units) has a prereq of
CHEM 401 (5 units) which has a prereq of
CHEM 400 (5 units) which has a prereq of
CHEM 300 (4 units) [which has an advisory concurrent enrollment of CHEM 317 (1 unit)].

I also know a decent amount of people that took calculus in HS and tested much lower on the assessment test. So just a clear breakdown of prereqs (again I have no clue where you fall on this ladder.)
MATH 420 which has a prereq of
MATH 401 which has a prereq of
MATH 400 which has a prereq of
MATH 370 which has a prereq of
MATH 334 -or- MATH 335 which have the prereqs
MATH 120 AND MATH 110 which both have the prereq
MATH 100

Just something to keep in mind. Best of luck.

Thanks fr the reply guys.

To jdom24:
That’s great then. I decided to pursue AS in Bio since my goal (Veterinary Med) has a prereq of Bio and most courses in this major overlap with Chem major. So they dont know if you have a degree? How come? Should it be written in the transcript?

And about that course load, that’s freakin insane. Well, I havent tested myself yet with that amount and probably will never have a chance due to my situation. However, not to brag about it, I discovered that even without seriousness and without enough time to study I can pull a grade of B and A in all of my classes. But I cant slack from now on since these next courses are in a different level. However, I really cant do anything about having lack of time. Anyway, thanks.

Oh!! I forgot to mentioned that I’m done with Intro Chem and GChem series. I’m heading to OChem now. Also, I just finished my precalc this summer and now heading to Calc series.
