Community College Transfer?

I’m starting community college soon (philly) and I’m already looking at colleges to transfer to after i get my associates so that I know what requirements I need to fulfill. I was looking at some Ivy Leagues and I noticed that Columbia was among the list of Ivies that give free tuition to low income students so I decided that Columbia may be my top choice in transferring, but I know that’s not definite so I have some backups. I read on a lot of sites that transfers to Columbia from other colleges, especially community, is rare so I’m dedicated to doing everything I can to set myself apart and be accepted. I’d appreciate it if some accepted Columbia transfer students (preferably from community but anywhere else is fine too) posted their stats so that I know what I need to do and aim for the next 2 years? Thank you!

Indeed, some of the Ivies have fantastic fin aid for lower income people. But b/c of this, they get tons of transfer applicants with the most superior credentials. Those that are viable transfer applicants are those students who, as HS seniors, were viable freshman applicants i.e. best of the best in their schools, tons of merit scholarships, accepts from very selective schools and near perfect college performance. I peeked at your HS credentials and selective colleges like the Ivies aren’t viable for you, I’m afraid.

But all isn’t lost. At your comm college will be many like yourself – who want to perform well and find the best possible (and affordable) 4 year college afterward. Knock out a semester with great grades and continue this path. Then get a feel for where the successful students are heading. Get to know your school’s “transfer counselor” – his/her sole job is to advise students on their next step.

Good luck.

I never posted my final senior grades on here. plus if I’m going to transfer my junior year then I doubt they’ll put much emphasis on it. but thanks.

In a previous post (Sep '14), you mentioned that you scored a 1440/2400SAT and ACT 20 and a 3.76 GPA when you were asking about how to improve your chances at PSU – what your final grades or later scores were, I dunno. But you’re mistaken about selective colleges going back to your HS grades. Many people can get a 4.0 in community college. Temple has decent fin aid. Maybe keep them in your sights. Good luck.
