Community College Transfer

Hello everyone,

I come from a household where no one has gone to college so I was never motivated or encouraged to try too hard in high school. I had to motivate myself and learn everything about college and their benefits on my own. Unfortunately I did not learn this until my late junior year. I ended up applying to a couple of schools and got into a few, however I knew with my motivation I could do better… so I attended my local community college.

Academics:
High School GPA: 2.6
ACT: 24

Extracurriculars:
Varsity Starter on the boys soccer team (Freshmen-Senior)
Played on top 3 club soccer team year round (Freshmen-Senior)

I just finished my first quarter of community college and I do not enjoy it at all. I have a huge drive and lots of determination academically and it is not matched by my peers at the community college. I am looking to transfer to a university that offers a good finance program (My goal is investment banking) as well as a good social scene (Greek life, active students, etc.)

College Academics:
Microeconomics: A-
Statistics: A-
Anthropology: A-

Extracurriculars:
I play on the mens soccer team and was recruited on scholarship. I also work part time. (planning on highlighting that I was able to keep high grades even while playing a collegiate sport everyday and working every other day). I am joining the investment club start of winter quarter. Will be apart of the Phi Thetta Kappa (national community college honors society).

The biggest challenge with my application would be the fact that I do not have many classes under my belt in college so they may put a strong emphasis on my high school stats, which as you can tell are bad. So far I have University of Washington (my state school) and University of Southern California on my radar of schools to apply to. What are my chances with these schools? Is there any other schools anyone can think of that I may have a shot in getting into as a sophomore? Or should I grind out the full two years at CC at transfer somewhere as junior?

Criteria:
Good undergrad business school
Active Student Life
Greek Life (preferred but not necessary)
Generous Financial Aid

You need to go meet with the Transfer Advisor at your CC. That person’s whole job is to help the CC students find good places to transfer to. One quarter of CC grades is not much to go on as a transfer applicant given your high school GPA. Since you are an athlete, there may be some chance of getting recruited, ask about that too.

Usually the best option is to finish out the full associates degree, and complete the articulation (guaranteed admission) requirements that the state U has for your major. Your situation might be different, so do get help at your own CC.

Also, read up on the Jack Kent Cooke transfer scholarship http://www.jkcf.org/scholarship-programs/undergraduate-transfer/ and any others that are currently available for PTK members. There is money out there for the right student.

Wishing you all the best!
