Community college vs. university?

Ok, so I'm a HS Sophomore, but I will be going abroad for my junior year, missing a lot of the college search stuff so I'm starting early. My question is:

I want to go pre-med and then hopefully med school. I know that, technically, your major doesn't matter, but what do you recommend? also, in terms of college, my stepmom works at the local community college, so i can go there for free. Money is a big issue for us, so that would help immensely. Should I do that to get some reqs. out of the way, and then transfer to a university, or just go to university? I am able to do either, but the free school would certainly help. How would med schools see that? any thoughts are appreciated. thanks!

No, not technically. It actually doesn't matter.

Major does not matter as long as you take all the required courses. A lot of people major in Biological Sciences / Biochem because it covers all the courses you'll need for medical school plus more.
As far as whether to go to CC then transfer to university or go to university directly, each has its advantages and disadvantages. The advantages of going to a CC first are 1. Save money. 2. You'll probably get higher GPA the first two year. The advantages of going to university directly are that you transition to university together with everyone else. Students in university seem to be more focused and more competitive. If you transfer after two years, everyone else is already up to speed while you are adjusting to the university setting.
I am a sophomore in a university. When I took public speaking class in a CC last summer, the students from universities attending the CC for summer always went to the class prepared. We researched and prepared Power Point presentations for our speeches while the regular CC students just showed up, ill prepared and said whatever were in their mind. They will have a tough time and their GPA will suffer if they transfer to university and think that they can do projects the way they did in CC.
