How to you let colleges know how much volunteer hours you have? I know there is an 'activies' section on the online application, but it doesn't specify the exact amount of hours you did.

Assuming you are in high school:
If you turned in proper paperwork to go along with community service hours you turned in to your school, the amount of hours you completed (as submitted to and recorded by your school) is probably on your transcript (it is on mine). You can ask a counselor (or whoever is in charge of transcripts) to confirm if it is indeed included on your school’s official transcripts.

If they weren’t formally submitted to your school (were just done separately), then you should list it in your activies in the common app. There IS a section for the time you spent on it. There are two boxes to fill in: one for hours/week and one for weeks/year.

Also, just something to note, even if the transcript has # of hours completed for school, it does not specify what you did to earn them. Therefore, if you did something note-worthy and long-term, you should use the activites section to specifically point it out.
