Hi, I am an upcoming sophomore. How important is community service for college applications (Ivy League and similar)? I am not keen on doing community service because I have a bunch of other EC's and AP classes, etc. The only reason I'm asking is because it is really hyped in my district to do it, so I'm just wondering if there's a reasonable basis for this.

Well even if it doesn’t help you get into a good college, I do think you should do some community service, you know for the sake of your community! However, to answer your question it doesn’t hold that much weight unless you did something major or it meant a lot to you. With that said though, I would advise not having any community service on your record. If you are not going to do community service at least do something else outside of school, like get a job or join a non school sponsored club.

I am the president of the math club at my school and I recently extended this to a middle school around my area. I basically go there a few times each week and teach the students math and help them prepare for contests. I am the only person involved in this. Would this count as community service?

Sorry but no yo aren’t helping the community, you are just helping them win a contest, but that is really good and will look good on an app.

Thank you sincerely for your help. I appreciate it.

Your welcome!

I know this is kinda late…but btw WELCOME TO CC!!

Haha, thanks. It’s not late at all.
