How important is community service to getting into a school? I am going to be a senior and graduate in 2012. I have been really sick and planned on volunteering but have been just trying to get healthy lately.

I plan on joining Interact next year which does stuff like that, but how important is it, even if I don't do any will it make or break me?

Community service is just one of the many ECs that you can do. It probably wouldn’t make or break you. I think it’s more of something you should be doing just to help the community anyway, not just for college. Sometimes it also gives you more experience, and sometimes it just makes you feel like a better person in general.

But if you’re volunteering for the sake of college, it’s probably too late if you’re already going to be a senior. I don’t think that it’ll really have that much affect on you, depending on what else you do. You can always explain your situation to the colleges.

Community service shows that you are able to help others and it shows work experience, beside the paycheck aspect ;). Schools don’t wanna see some selfish snob with a 4.0 GPA and a 2000+ SAT without some EC’s.

Thanks for your answers. I did do some community service before I developed my health condition and hope to be able to do some more once I get better.
You both put it in perspective, thanks.
